About Axum
Axum was once the center of the Aksumite Kingdom, one of the great civilizations of the ancient world that traded with Rome, Persia, and India. The city is famous for its towering granite stelae, carved obelisks erected as grave markers for elite tombs nearly two thousand years ago. The tallest once reached over 30 meters. Religious tradition also holds that the Ark of the Covenant is kept in Axum at the Church of St. Mary of Zion. Whether one accepts the claim or not, the belief itself shapes the city’s profound religious significance.
